My mother has her own business writing film teaching guides to sell to schools (she's an ex English teacher) and since I started going to uni and she started proofreading my essays for me, she has started to ask me for help with her work. It's kind of weird and awesome how much more she appears to respect my opinions! Anyway, while I'm happy to help I sometimes don't feel like enough of an expert, so I'm going to put this recent question to the ol' flist, and then put together the perfect answer for her (hopefully).
How would you differ between symbolism and metaphor in film?
I've given her a very untechnical answer already but I'd love to hear from you guys. The more academic but easy to understand, the better.
